Dear Fifi,
You’re my favorite hello and hardest goodbye…stay?
Love — Santa
“Hmm… I don’t know where to begin. You know what? If this is meant to be, whoever it is will stop me. They’ll confront me. If this is real…I’m leaving it up to the universe. I’m still waiting for that big neon sign.” She shrugged.
You don’t sound too disappointed it isn’t Gabe…did I miss something? He’s all you talked about last night.”
“Gabe is a really nice guy, but he isn’t my type.” Fifi shrugged. “Plus, he has a date over in Arrow Springs tomorrow. We spent the night catching up is all. Good news, though, I remember him now.”
“Well, that’s something. At least you got a friend out of the deal.”
“Yeah, I suppose. But what does it matter now? I begged the universe for some sort of sign, and this is what it gave me. I’m back to square one. Looks like I’m leaving.”
Doc took a minute to work on the baby raccoons and assess their health before introducing them to mama cat. Fifi watched as he and his tech went to great lengths to carefully introduce them to mama cat, taking their time letting her choose the babies. She sniffed them, inspected them, even licked one of them. Doc let her move closer to them without putting them in harm’s way until she finally plopped down on her side so her kittens could nurse. When one of the raccoons searched her out, she didn’t reject it.
They sat for more than an hour, watching nature take an interesting twist as the cat finally accepted the baby raccoons. It worked.
“It’s like she knows they needed her,” Fifi whispered.
“Maybe she does. Animals can be very intuitive and emotional. We just don’t give them enough credit.”
“So, what’s next?” Fifi asked.
“We watch them, make sure they continue to bond and that she can sustain the extra mouths. At some point, we may have to help her out and bottle feed, but this is the best thing for them right now. Mother nature at her best.”
“It’s just lovely. This place. What you do,” Fifi said, tears threatening. “What you do is important. These animals need you, and so do all the animals to come. You know there are groups in Holly-weird that eat this stuff up and would fundraise to save a rock or a street sign. I’ll make some calls. These animals will be funded. I just know it.”
“You’d do that? But you’re leaving?” Doc questioned.
Fifi laid her head on his shoulder and watched the cat take in two orphan raccoons. “I am. But you don’t have to.”
“You said Holly-weird.” Doc snorted.
“Yeah, well…perspective,” Fifi said, pointing to the cat nursing baby raccoons.
